Merida is the largest city and capital of the state of the Yucatan.

  • Merida is a lovely colonial city that offers a taste of old Mexico.

  • When the Spaniards "discovered" this Mayan town, it reminded them of Spain's Merida and thus it's name.

  • What exists today was constructed in the 1500's.  Beautiful large homes, government buildings, cathedrals and churches were patterned after those in Paris.

  • A central plaza welcomes visitors and inhabitants to relax and enjoy the cities upbeat energy.

  • The many museums, such as the Museum of Popular Art and Anthropology and the History Museum show the history of this colorful country.
