At one time a city of 50,000, Coba is the
largest of the ancient Maya Ruins and this site covers 50
square kilometers. The area is remote and there are
long distances in between structures as most of this site
is not excavated.
-
The first construction of this site
started in 600 A.D. The remains of over 50 roads
in the outlying area lead to Coba suggesting that it
was the largest city of the time.
-
Over 30 stelea, some of them carved,
stand where they were discovered, some depicting
discernible detail of the Maya History.
-
There are many shallow lakes and
marshy areas on the grounds, which are home to many
species of birds and butterflies. Strolling from
one structure to another, it is possible to see
Herons, Egrets, and many other species of
birds.
-
The best time to see the ruin site is
early in the morning when the gates open.
-
Stay the night at Coba and enjoy
the lush jungle and peaceful romantic environment.

Villa Arqueologica

This hotel is a five-minute walk from the ruins.
It is set in the lush jungle area of Coba, next to Lake Caba. All
rooms have two twin beds (non-convertible). All rooms have
A/C. A beautiful pool sits at the center of the grounds of this
unassuming two-story hacienda hotel. There is also a restaurant
and bar as well as library and reading room. Wake up early and go
to the tiny shop Nicta Ha, next to the hotel. Buy some coffee and
you may have the opportunity to see the owner feed some of the crocodile
that live in Lake Coba. They're huge! (We recommend that you not
swim in Lake Coba
