Chichen Itza is located approximately a
2½ hour drive from Cancun.
-
This is an easy ride
along the quota (toll road).
-
One of the most
impressive of the ruins in the Yucatan, it covers about 10
square miles.
-
Try to arrive here early while it is
still cool and before the tour busses come.
-
Overnighting in Chichen Itza gives you the advantages that
the day trippers will miss. It gives the opportunity to
witness the spectacular sound and light show played only
at night and the opportunity to enter the grounds as soon
as the gates open.
-
The temples and pyramids of
Chichen Itza offer insight into the Mayan civilization and
show examples of their advanced thinking.
-
El
Castillo is the grandest of the pyramids and measures 75
feet high.
-
Twice a year during the spring and fall
equinox the sun hits this temple at an angle and the
shadow of the sacred serpent Kulkakan appears and slithers
up or down the stairs.
-
The inner chamber of El
Castillo is frequently opened to the public and deep
inside lies a red jaguar studded in jade. Also on
the ground is the sacred cenote. It is believe to be
the home of the rain god Chac. To coax him into
sending rain, human sacrifices and offerings were made on
a regular basis by the ancient Maya.
