Celestun is a small unassuming fishing
village on the Gulf of Mexico. Celestun is adjacent
to the 147,000 acre estuary.
-
This estuary is a
biosphere reserve and bird lovers will be in heaven!
Half the reserve is covered with mangroves, a perfect
breeding environment for approximately 300 species of
birds. Some rest here on their winter migration
while many others stay.
-
Birds making their home here
include the Great Egret, Cormorants, Frigates, Anhinga and
even the elusive Tiger Heron.
-
This area is
especially known for the beautiful American Flamingo, an
elegant, colorful bird. It is common to find
yourself in the midst of huge flocks of these colorful
creatures while on a tour.
-
Although the village is modest in its
offering, there are several miles of deserted beaches
covered with beautiful shells. The same Conch, Starfish,
and other shells for sale in Cancun litter the beach
here.
-
You can literally walk undisturbed for miles
and miles on these beaches.
